Cub Campers is a family-owned Australian business, manufacturing a large range of camper trailers from their NSW factory.
As trailer manufacturers, Cub Campers are legally required to record a variety of data as well as weight information for every trailer they produce. This includes the Tare Mass (or the weight of the trailer as built, with all factory fixtures and options), the Tow Ball Mass (which is the weight applied to the towing vehicle’s “tow ball” when the trailer is connected) and the Aggregate Trailer Mass (which is the maximum allowable weight of the camper trailer fully laden and sitting on the jockey wheel).
Cub Campers had used the same trailer weighing system for years, but it had seen better days. With trailer regulations and compliance requirements expected to tighten, the management team decided they needed a more modern, efficient, and future-proof system. Cub Campers also wanted a weighing system that was safer for their staff to use as the original system required a degree of manual handling. Cub Campers contacted National Weighing & Instruments to look for advice and assistance in finding an operationally and commercially sound outcome.
National Weighing & Instruments recommended a system that included 2 different sized in-ground weighting platforms connected to a single Bilanciai DD2050 DIADE terminal with a large 30.7cm touch screen colour display. The DD2050 enclosure is made from AISI 305 stainless steel. The terminal has a built-in ticket printer and a transaction storage/record keeping function. Together, these features combine to provide Cub Campers with the utmost efficiency.
The software development team at National Weighing & Instruments created custom weighing software specifically for Cub Campers to increase and streamline the amount of data captured during the weighing process.
Importantly, the increased recording capabilities were achieved, whilst maintaining an intuitive and user-friendly front-end environment for the Cub Campers operators.
How it works
Using a tractor, staff simply back the trailer onto the weighing platforms. The axle is positioned on the large weighing platform and the jockey wheel is positioned on the smaller weighing platform.
The operator selects the model of camper trailer to be weighed from the touch screen menu, adds the VIN details, selects how many tickets to print and the weighing process is complete. The trailer weighing details and VIN are stored in the system in a CSV format. If required, this data can be exported via the inbuilt USB port, to a portable storage device for transfer to Excel for further record enhancement / cross referencing with production sheets etc.
Cub Campers have been able to significantly increase their trailer weighing efficiency in terms of time, accuracy and the ability to record and store records at an individual camper trailer level. The new system has also eliminated the need for any manual handling each time a trailer is weighed.
